Code of Conduct Change - Use of Student-Owned Devices
Posted on 10/28/2019

On November 4, the Ministry of Education’s new policy that restricts the use of personal mobile devices during instructional time will go into effect. The Ministry defines a personal mobile device to be a personal electronic device that can be used to communicate or to access the Internet, such as a cellphone or a tablet.

The use of personal mobile devices during instructional time will only be permitted under the following circumstances:

  • for educational purposes, as directed by an educator;
  • for health and medical purposes; and
  • to support special education needs.

This practice is already in place in many of our schools, it will simply now be formalized across the UCDSB. Teaching staff will communicate to their classes when they can and cannot use personal devices in class, as well as post signage that will be visible when students enter the class.

This new policy is for in-class time and does not pertain to breaks between classes, lunch periods or recesses. If you have concerns about being able to reach your child during the school day, contact your school principal directly.
