Labour Update

Today Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Provincial gave notice of a possible strike as of Monday, Oct. 7. We are uncertain at this time if a strike will transpire as the parties have said they are willing to continue with negotiations.

We are currently working through what actions we will need to take if a strike takes place. Due to the uncertainty around the situation, we encourage parents and guardians to have childcare plans in place for Monday.

Please understand that CUPE represents 1,600 employees within our school board, in 10 different employee groups including: educational assistants (EAs), early childhood educators (ECEs), custodial/maintenance staff, clerical staff (including school office staff), library workers, and information technology staff. This represents 40 per cent of our workforce. The work restrictions that are currently in place under the work-to-rule campaign have placed a significant strain on the regular operations of our schools – especially at the elementary level.

We will continue to update our families and communities as needed through various communication channels including the Board website (www.ucdsb.on.ca), My Family Room and social media.
