March 18, 2019 (Brockville, ON) – Brockville Collegiate Institute’s (BCI) Relying on Other Teen Support (R.O.O.T.S) team is working to build a prom and graduation dress inventory for their event called 27 Dresses and Counting, to be held in early April.

R.O.O.T.S is a girls’ mentoring club that organizes activities to help teens make smart choices. The dress event is an annual activity held at the school to ensure that anyone who wants a dress for prom or graduation has one.

This year’s event will see the learning commons room at BCI be transformed into a dress boutique. Doors will be open for any Grade 8 or Grade 12 students from any school to try on dresses and take one home, free of charge.

“It is important to encourage reusing and recycling at this event,” says Shannon McKinnon, an organizer of the event and teacher at BCI. “But, it also reminds students that they do not need to spend a fortune on their dress.”

The group is asking the public to check their closets and donate any modern dresses in good condition. Dresses can be dropped off during school hours to the front office.

“The more dresses, the better,” explains McKinnon. “We want students to feel like they have a choice and ensure that they find the perfect dress that they feel proud in.”

McKinnon has helped organize the event five times between 2011 and 2015 and has seen over 100 dresses donated. “The support we’ve had for this event from the community has been outstanding. It’s a real feel good night,” she says.

The dresses that do not get taken home after the event will be kept in inventory for the following year.
