UCDSB Update Jan 28

This school year has been about balancing our students’ academic needs and the obligation to keep them, and our staff, safe while at school. This morning, the Ministry of Education confirmed that schools supported by the Eastern Ontario Health Unit  (EOHU), which are schools located in Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry (SDG), Prescott-Russell and Cornwall, will re-open for in-person learning on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2021.

As you know, Grade 1-8 students attending UCDSB schools located within the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit region returned to in-person learning on Monday, Jan. 25, 2021 and will continue in this state going forward. Grade 9-12 students attending schools located within the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit will continue with plans to return to in-person learning on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2021.

As a large school district that has two separate health units now operating under different requirements, the Upper Canada District School Board will proceed forward in the following ways:

  • Elementary students attending schools supported by the Leeds, Grenville, and Lanark Health Unit returned to in-person learning on January 25.
  • Secondary students attending schools supported by the Leeds, Grenville, Lanark Health Unit area will return to in-person learning on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2021, which is also the Quadmester 3 start date.
  • All Elementary and Secondary students attending schools supported by the Eastern Ontario Health Unit jurisdiction will return to in-person learning on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2021.

To confirm your school’s opening date, you can check the listing here.

Further items of note:

  • Monday, Feb. 1, 2021 is a Ministry of Education approved Professional Activity Day (PA Day) for UCDSB staff, and there will be no school programs for students. All students return to in-person learning on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2021.
  • Remote learning options offered prior to the holiday break are still available.
  • As announced earlier this month, all students in Grades 1-12 are required to wear non-medical or cloth masks indoors at school, including in hallways and during class times, on school transportation and outdoors during recess where students cannot maintain physical distancing. Masking in Kindergarten is optional but encouraged.
  • School bus transportation for all eligible students will resume in the Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry (SDG), Prescott-Russell and Cornwall areas on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2021. School bus transportation for schools located within the Leeds, Grenville Lanark District Health Unit area will continue with its regular routes on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2021.

Today’s announcement regarding the reopening of all school sites in our school district is very encouraging. Indeed, many will recall that the initial assessment of community-based public health projected a return to school date on Feb. 10, 2021. We commend and thank everyone who followed the direction of public health officials that has resulted in a reduction of the confirmed cases of COVID-19. All of us understand the importance of continuing to follow the enhanced public health measures at this critical time, including the need to continue self-screening for symptoms of the coronavirus /COVID-19.

We wish you and your family good health as we continue forward with the important work of teaching and learning in our schools.

Sincerely,

Stephen Sliwa
Director of Education
Upper Canada District School Board
