May 23rd, 2018 (Brockville, ON) – Trustees with the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) met on Wednesday, May 9th, 2018 to discuss several agenda items:
Central Public School Presentation: Principal Cary Kronwald and Vice Principal Ryne Gove presented the Central Public School Improvement Plan for Student Achievement and Wellness. The plan shows how the school is advancing student learning in the key areas of literacy and mathematics, as well as enhancing student wellness. In both math and literacy, school learning teams have established success criteria, or the steps students must take to improve their reading and mathematical skills. They will post these steps in anchor charts on classroom walls so students have a reference laying out the pathways to success. Teachers will also model these steps for students to allow them to see how a successful literacy or mathematics lesson is learned. The school uses “focus” students, those representing different skill levels, to gauge classroom success. Teachers monitor their progress to see what strategies work and then adjust instructional approaches to improve the success of all students. In literacy, the focus at the junior level is on “inferencing,” which is finding the hidden message. At the primary level, the emphasis is on early reading behaviours such as finding the meaning of words by taking clues from pictures, finding familiar words and using the knowledge of letters and sounds. In mathematics, classes are taught to break down problems into their important parts to better understand what is being asked of them. The school also uses math manipulatives, multiplication tables, and instructional strategies such as number talks to help students learn. Student wellness is enhanced through the school’s co-op program, Zones of Regulation program, sensory room, multipurpose room, and strong partnerships with community agencies.
Overview of Community Planning and Partnership Annual Meetings: Superintendent Phil Dawes updated trustees with respect to the annual Community Planning and Partnership meetings. The purpose of these meetings, as specified in the Board’s Facility Collaboration Policy 4002, is to share planning information to promote stronger working relationships with area municipalities and service organizations. In accordance with the Policy, 28 UCDSB schools are identified as having surplus space that could be considered for partnership purposes on a cost recoverable basis. In considering these opportunities, the Board is also looking for partnerships that are appropriate for school settings and support the Board’s overall student achievement strategies. The upcoming meetings will also provide an opportunity to share planning information related to area demographics, enrolments, and Facility Projects. The meetings will take place June 6 at 1 p.m. at the old General Vanier site, located at 1500 Cumberland Street in Cornwall and June 8 at 10 a.m. at the North Grenville Municipal Centre, located at 285 County Road 44 in Kemptville.
First Nation, Métis, and Inuit Self Identification: Trustees revised the First Nation, Métis and Inuit Voluntary Self-Identification policy, changing its name to “Indigenous Student Voluntary Self-Identification.’ References in the policy to “First Nation, Métis and Inuit students” were also changed to “Indigenous students.” This adjustment reflects the language adopted by the provincial Ministry of Education and the Government of Ontario in its correspondence and publications.
