Winners Ontario Skills Green Energy Challenge

April 10, 2018 (Alexandria, ON)Glengarry District High School (GDHS) hosted 130 Upper Canada District School Board students Friday for the Skills Ontario Green Energy Challenge.

Working in integrated teams of intermediate students from GDHS and Tagwi Secondary School (TSS), students built and tested model windmills that they had designed following collaborative research into green energy in the weeks leading up to the competition. Projects were judged by community members from local municipalities, as well as agencies such as Ontario Hydro. Points were awarded on the judges’ scoring for design, quality of construction, voltage output and an assessment of each team’s report on their project.

The challenge helped students learn about the value of green energy, as well as important skills in mathematics, geography and science through designing, building and testing their own windmill model. It permitted them to make the connection between what they are learning in class and how it applies to life outside of school.

“It also allows them to develop problem solving and communication skills, skills they will need when they enter the workforce,” said Lindsey Howes, a teacher at GDHS who organized the event.

The winner of this year’s challenge was the team of: Carl Marfurt-Breakenridge (GDHS); Markus Gandia (GDHS); and Zac L’Ecuyer (TSS). The team’s model recorded an output of 138 mV and 128 total points.

Second place was earned by the team of Kayla McPherson (GDHS), Bridan Russett (GDHS), and Jacob MacDonell (TSS). The students’ windmill recorded an output of 150 mV and 120.7 points.

Third place was achieved by the team of Emily Gareau (GDHS), Madison MacLeod (GDHS), Bryanna Boer (TSS), and Paige Moores-McNicol (TSS). Their entry posted a 64 mV output and 118 points.
