Brockville Collegiate Institute (BCI) held its annual Orientation Day on Thursday, allowing 200 new students to connect with staff and students and prepare for the coming school year.

Students entering Grades 7 and 9 toured the school, met their principal and other key staff, and gained new friends who welcomed them to BCI and will help them succeed. Grade 9 students were introduced to their Link Crew leaders and Grade 7 students met their WEB Crew leaders, two groups of high school and Grade 8 students who guide new students throughout the year as they transition from the elementary and intermediate levels.

“The purpose of the day is to set up a smooth transition for our students,” said Principal Chris Boston. “We provide them the opportunity to connect with their friends, make new ones, and to reduce the stress that can come with attending a new school and beginning a new school year.

“We want them to start the year focused on relationship building, school spirit, learning, and having fun.”

The day began with large-group activities in the school cafeteria where students were welcomed by Boston. Later they split into smaller groups to tour the high school, and participate in team building and spirit games in BCI’s classrooms. The activities encouraged students to learn each other’s names, discuss their likes and dislikes, and find common interests.

The day was one of many held across the UCDSB at various secondary schools which are all designed to reduce student anxiety during student transitions.
