May 1, 2018 (Brockville, ON) – Trustees with the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) met on Wednesday, April 25th, 2018 to discuss several agenda items:

Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School (CCVS) Presentation: Principal Chris Boulay, Vice Principal Tracy Armstrong and Vice Principal Marty Dettman explained how the school is improving math and literacy results, as well as staff and student wellness under CCVS’s School Improvement Plan for Student Achievement and Wellness. Staff are working with students to create success criteria, setting out steps students can take to meet their learning goals – such as how to make good inferences by looking at an example text for meaning, reviewing their own experiences to relate to that text, and then making predictions. The school enhances wellness through a strong, responsive Student Support Team, LINK Crew and WEB Crew program to help with student transitioning, and a wide variety of sporting and club activities.

Vanier Public School Presentation: Principal Mike Vincent discussed strategies staff are using to improve student results and wellness through the School Improvement Plan for Student Achievement and Wellness. The school is working to improve student literacy through strategies such as using consistent templates showing proper steps to write correctly, modelling how to write complete sentences, and using prompts to build vocabulary and lead student understanding. In math, classes are encouraged to discuss strategies to reach an answer and share it with the class so students can see different pathways to success. The school has also invested in the Mathletics math program, an online program which helps students learn math problems, and gets them excited about learning through healthy competition with others using the program. The school enhances student wellness in several ways such as providing daily “calming time” so students can focus on their learning, indoor cafes, intramural and school team sports, and support from outside agencies such as Big Brothers Big Sisters of Leeds and Grenville.

2018-2019 Grants for Student Needs and Budget Information: Superintendent of Business Robert Backstrom presented a report on the Grants for Student Needs as well as other factors that will impact the upcoming budget process. Backstrom advised that some Ministry financial data has not yet been received and reviewed budget presentation timelines, announced education funding highlights, and discussed budget process next steps.

Graduation Rate Presentation: Superintendents Phil Dawes and David Coombs made a presentation on the Board’s graduation rate and a Board pilot project designed to help more students graduate. Dawes revealed that due to strategies employed by the Board, the overall UCDSB graduation rate rose to 84.4 per cent in 2016-2017, up from 80.7 per cent in 2013-2014. Coombs explained what the Board is doing to help more students graduate, a key priority under the Director’s Work Plan. The Board has been creating stronger connections with 5th year students, many who are enrolled at the TR Leger School of Adult, Alternative and Continuing Education, and reengaging with those who did not complete their education in 2016-17 for various reasons. Student Success Learning Partners are working with school staff across the District to reengage these students in school and provide the support they need to graduate. Coombs said the Board needs to reach an additional 185 students to meet its target of a 2 per cent annual increase in the graduation rate.
