Thousand Islands Secondary School Dominates
2016 Upper Canada Cup Cross-Country Championships

(Brockville) Thousand Islands Secondary School dominated the 2016 Upper Canada Cup Cross-Country Championships Tuesday at Memorial Park in Brockville.

The school won the championship banner in the intermediate division. The Pirates were helped by strong performances from Maggie Crawford, top Grade 7 girl, who posted a winning time of 12:07.85, and Matthew Worden, top Grade 8 boy, who finished in 10:39.85.

The TISS Grade 8 boys’ team, led by Worden, placed five members in the top six of their event. Worden was followed over the finish line by: Bronson Greaves, third, (11:06.5); Tristan Noseworthy, fourth, (11:12.7); Ethan Mahoney, fifth, (11:13.3); and Carson Wright, sixth, (11:13.35).

TISS also had the top Grade 7 girls’ and boys’ teams in the championships, while their Grade 8 girls’ team finished second.

Tournament Co-Convener Randy Givogue said concerted training and dedication helped TISS take the banner.

“It’s a really dedicated group of people,” said Givogue, of reasons for his school’s success. “Coaches work really hard to get the kids out. We have strong teams right across the board in Grades 7 and 8 with a lot of depth. There’s also a lot of camaraderie and dedication, and our kids work out three nights a week.”

Carleton Place High School (CPHS) finished second overall in the intermediate team standings. CPHS also had the top Grade 8 girls’ team, led by Hannah Penz (12:10.65) and Lydia Georgison (12:22.10.)

Perth and District Collegiate Institute placed third overall in the intermediate division, while the team from Westminster Public School won the overall elementary crown.

Other team winners at the event were: Grade 6 girls, R Tait McKenzie Public School ; Grade 6 boys, Kemptville Public School ; Grade 5 girls, Westminster Public School ; Grade 5 boys, Caldwell Street Public School; Grade 4 girls, Westminster Public School ; and Grade 4 boys, The Stewart School.
