Longue Sault Public School Teacher Running
150 Kilometres to Ottawa Today for Terry Fox

UPDATE : Callan finished his run in the early morning hours of November 5. The teacher raised a total of $7,000 in donations.

(Williamstown) – He’s testing his limits for Terry Fox.

Longue Sault Public School (LSPS) teacher Ian Callan is running 150 kilometres today to raise money for the Terry Fox Foundation, and to help his school celebrate Canada’s upcoming Sesquicentennial. His run, which began early this morning in Williamstown, will take him through Cornwall, Long Sault, Ingleside and then up to Ottawa.

The physical literacy teacher says a big part of the run is to show area students they can push their personal limits and succeed.

“It’s showing our kids that really, you don’t have any limits,” he said. “If you have a dream, and a goal, go out and achieve it.”

Callan has a history of pushing his personal limits. The ultra-marathoner ran 100 kilometres last year as part of a Terry Fox Foundation fundraiser for his school.

This year he is being joined on the run by friends and running enthusiasts with the Cornwall Multisport Club, as well as LSPS Grade 3 student Keaton Wagensveld, who was eager to join Callan after hearing about his plans. Wagensveld ran the 25-kilometre stretch from Cornwall to Rothwell-Osnabruck School (RO) in Ingleside. He raised about $3,200 in pledges for the Terry Fox Foundation. Callan has an overall fundraising goal of $4,000.

Both Callan and Wagensveld say Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope prompted them to set such rigorous personal goals for today’s run.

“I saw what Terry Fox did and it just inspired me,” said Wagensveld.

“Terry really deserves this,” added Callan. “His legacy is huge, so we have to do something huge. Terry was such a good role model and a great Canadian. This is our way of sharing and celebrating his legacy.”

Callan and Wagensveld celebrated the run with students at
Viscount Alexander Public School (VAPS) this morning after Callan arrived in Cornwall. They ran a ceremonial lap around the schoolyard with some VAPS students, before Callan, Wagensveld and their running partners headed off to complete the stretch to Ingleside.

Earlier in the morning, Wagensveld dipped his foot into a canal of the St. Lawrence River near VAPS, in homage to Fox, who began the Marathon of Hope by dipping his foot into the Atlantic Ocean.

Callan is expected to finish his run in Ottawa Saturday morning around 3 a.m. outside the Terry Fox Memorial Statue.
