Editor's Note: Today is World Teachers' Day. To celebrate, the
Upper Canada District School Board would like to introduce you to Andy Carruthers, one of our quality teachers.

Andy Carruthers

This outstanding teacher demonstrates that if you build a classroom that is relevant, and inspires creativity, students come to learn.

A graduate of Queen’s University’s Faculty of Education, Carruthers was a key organizer of the innovative Makerspace design room at Almonte and District High School (ADHS). The design room serves as everything from a welding shop to a glass etching studio all rolled into one. It features several different workstations, all with cutting-edge tools or devices that have been secured for the program through partnerships forged with area businesses. The Makerspace room offers students endless possibilities and takes engagement to a completely different level. Under Carruthers’s guidance, students have excelled in robotics, welding and metalwork, stain glass and glass etchings, woodworking, 3D printing, and T-shirt making.

The design room inspires out-of-the-box thinking among ADHS students. Students involved with Makerspace were so successful in robotics design that an ADHS team won the Eastern Ontario Robotics Championships last year. Other students have used the room for welding and metalwork, using their creativity to build go-karts. Woodworking students have designed ping-pong ball launchers. Makerspace 3D printers have been used to create a prosthetic toe for a student’s family member, bobble-head dolls, and remote-control vehicle replacement parts, while a vinyl cutter keeps students engaged through creative T-shirt production.

The Makerspace room has been such a hit with high school students that Carruthers is helping colleagues at ADHS create a second Makerspace for intermediate students.

The 52 year-old began his teaching career ten years ago at South Grenville District High School. He has worked at ADHS for the past seven years.
