UCDSB Reaches Tentative Local Agreement with
OSSTF District 26 Occasional Teachers

By Mark Calder

(Brockville) – The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) reached a tentative memorandum of settlement Tuesday afternoon with the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) District 26 Occasional Teachers’ Bargaining Unit (OTBU). This local settlement, when ratified by the UCDSB and the OSSTF OTBU membership, will complete the bargaining process for secondary occasional teachers and complement the agreement on provincial issues achieved on August 20. Terms of the settlement will remain confidential until ratified by both parties.

“I am pleased with the progress we are making with our local negotiations and I’m optimistic we can come to a satisfactory agreement with all of our union partners as soon as possible,” said Chair Jeff McMillan. “I am gratified with the hard work and dedication that is taking place on both sides.”

“I am happy that the board and OSSTF OTBU reached a local agreement that is mutually beneficial to both parties,” added Director Charlotte Patterson. “In so doing, we contribute to the board's ultimate goal of improving student learning and well-being.”

“I am very pleased with the agreement we came to,” said Elaine Warner-Laxton, OSSTF District 26 OTBU president. “I think we have made good strides for our members and they will be happy with the agreement.”

The union bargaining unit will be holding a ratification meeting on Thursday, November 19 and voting will take place electronically from Friday, November 20 to Monday, November 23.

In addition to OSSTF full-time and occasional teachers, the Upper Canada District School Board is in negotiations with four other bargaining units representing elementary teachers, occasional elementary teachers, and support staff. Bargaining on local issues for these unions is ongoing and the UCDSB remains optimistic that those processes will be brought to a conclusion in a timely and cooperative manner.
