(Cornwall) Upper Canada District School Board  (UCDSB) students shined recently at the 2016 Kinsmen Music Festival  in Cornwall.

Students with the board excelled in vocal, instrumental and dance competition and also performed at the Concert of the Stars for top winners at the festival, said Al Merizzi, a drama teacher at St. Lawrence Secondary School  (SLSS).

“It was a great opportunity for us to showcase what we have to offer as a school board,” said Merizzi. “We have so much talent within our schools.”

“The Upper Canada District School Board was well-represented in terms of the number of entries as well as the variety and the different disciplines,” added Abi Fontaine, a dance teacher at SLSS.

This year’s festival saw students from Morrisburg Public School , North Dundas District High School (NDDHS) Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School   (CCVS), SLSS, Seaway District High School   (SDHS), Maxville Public School  (MPS), and Longue Sault Public School  (LSPS) take to the stage.

Schools in the eastern portion of the board encourage participation in the festival because it offers students the “professional experience” of performing in a theatre before the public, and having their performances critiqued by knowledgeable adjudicators.

A highlight of this year’s festival was the entry of the SLSS Stompers troupe, which won gold and performed at the Concert of the Stars.

The Stompers were joined at the Concert of the Stars by SLSS student and pianist Ayaka Ota, whose brilliant solo performance won her gold at the festival.

SLSS figured prominently in the dance competition with dancers winning no less than four golds, three medals of merit and two silvers.
