(Brockville) – After stepping up to compete in the senior pision at the 2016 Upper Canada District School Board Cheer Competition, Chimo Elementary School stepped up to take first place.

The Chimo squad’s routine earned a top score of 82.33 per cent at Wednesday’s event, hosted by Brockville Collegiate Institute , edging out an impressive performance by the Gananoque Intermediate and Secondary School (GISS) Senior Trojans by .33 per cent, said Zack Hong, a judge at the competition.

Judges rewarded Chimo for a clean performance such as precise snapping of the arms during movements, control in lifts and throws, and syncronicity on the floor. However, Hong said the elementary school’s victory really hinged on their high level of confidence and sense of excitement.

“There are so many things we look at in cheerleading but so much of it is just confidence – confidence is key,” said Hong. “While their technique was very clean, sometimes they bobbled it, but they still pushed through. And it also looked like they were really excited about what they were doing.”

Thousand Islands Secondary School took third place in the senior category. In the junior category, Lyn Public School took first, while the GISS junior team and Commonwealth Public School tied for second. As host school, BCI performed, but did not compete.
