SLSS Saints are EOSSAA
Senior Boys’ A Basketball Champs

(Brockville) – The St. Lawrence Secondary School Saints overcame a halftime deficit Tuesday to win the 2016 Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association Senior Boys’ A Basketball Championship.

After trailing hosts Brockville Collegiate Institute (BCI) 33-29 going into the third, the Saints rebounded for a 68-49 victory, said coach Jamie Carr.

Carr said a big reason for the victory was strong defence in the second half, which helped contain BCI star player Jackson Bayles.

“We held him to just two points in the second half, which was the key to our victory.” said Carr.

The Saints also benefitted from strong play from Talha Mahmood, who posted 21 points, Gobi Mohanathas, with 20 points, and Kadrae Wright, who added 12 points.

BCI coach Tom Bell said the Red Rams found it difficult to overcome the Saints’ balanced attack as well as strong defence. The coach said he was pleased with the team’s performance, citing both Bayles and teammate Connor Peters for strong play on the court.

Since the top two teams from the EOSSAA tournament qualify, the Saints and the Red Rams will now head to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations Boys' A Championship in Sault Ste. Marie on March 7-9.
