(Brockville) – “Panthers” of all ages will celebrate their school and take a walk down memory lane May 14 at the Prince of Wales Public School  (POW) 125 th Anniversary Celebration.

Current students, and alumni from across the nation, are expected to visit POW for the celebration. They will tour the school, and experience displays about its history and other interesting activities.

“We are inviting people to come and celebrate our 125 th school year,” said Jennifer Brouwer, chair of the Prince of Wales Public School 125 th  Anniversary Celebration  Committee. “We are hoping that we can connect with not only the students and staff present here today but past students and staff members, and the community.”

In the run-up to the celebration, the committee is asking the “Panther Nation” to visit the celebration Facebook  site and post selfie videos sharing what they liked best about their time at POW.

Meanwhile, the committee has several fun activities planned for the day, which runs from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., on the school grounds, including entertainment from popular local entertainers Healy and Orr, Rhinestone the Magician, heritage games such as bean bag toss and spin-the-wheel, and Elvis impersonator Kirk Francois. The committee will also host a barbecue, and will have both an ice cream cart and popcorn machine on site.

The committee is hosting a fundraiser that has traditionally been very popular at the school – a Prince of Wales Public School cake walk. The committee is seeking donations of cakes for the event.

As a special attraction during the day, the school will have the old “tower” classrooms open for a tour.

POW was originally established in 1890 as the New West Ward School, consisting of eight large classrooms and an indoor physical activity room – the current music room in the basement. At the time, the school was heated with coal and lit with gas, and teachers and students had to walk to distant outhouses as there was no indoor plumbing.

The current, newly refurbished and renamed Prince of Wales Public School was built in 1958 with 12 new additional classrooms, a large gym and change rooms, a music room, staff room, teacher work areas and a new office and administration area.

The celebration is being supported by several local businesses including: The Wedgewood Retirement Resort, McDonald’s Restaurant, Cowan’s Dairy Bar, The Butcher Shop, and Home Hardware.
