(Perth) – The Blue Devils came out on top in a nail-biter.

Perth and District Collegiate Institute (PDCI) won the Upper Canada Cup Intermediate Boys’ Basketball Championship Friday for the second year in a row, edging out the North Grenville District High School Knights 34-33.

Perth led 34-31 in the dying seconds of the game when North Grenville drew two foul shots. The Knights’ Owen Preston took to the foul line, sank the first intending to miss the second in the hope his team could retain possession, drain two points and send the game into overtime.

Unfortunately, the Knights’ point guard bounced the ball off the backboard and into the hoop, allowing Perth to regain possession and run out the clock.

“The level of intensity and emotion was something that I’ve never seen before in a Grade 7-8 basketball game,” said Kevin Bellamy, the convener of the tournament and father of Blue Devils’ point guard Will Bellamy who led PDCI to victory. The younger Bellamy posted 20 of the Blue Devils’ points, draining no less than four three-pointers.

For their part, the Knights were able to keep the game tight throughout all four periods, trailing by only 14-13 at halftime, led by Preston’s steady play.

“It was a heckuva finish, a really exciting final for both teams,” reflected Knights’ coach Dan Preston.

In the Upper Canada Cup Intermediate Girls’ Basketball Championship at PDCI on Thursday, Almonte and District High School beat Rideau District High School 26-21 in a tightly contested game. Almonte was able to defeat Rideau with strong inside scoring and rebounding.
