Gananoque Secondary School Wins #UCDSBReads Competition with over 2,100 votes for Dream Catcher

To mark National Aboriginal Day , the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) is pleased to announce that Dream Catcher, by Stella Calahasen, is the winner of #UCDSBReads!

 

Gananoque Secondary School (GSS) received over 2,100 online votes for its video submission supporting the book.

 

This event, which launched May 18, 2016, celebrated First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) literature, and was based on the #indigenousreads proposal by Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs.

 

Six school teams were assigned one book and each team produced a short video explaining why their book is one that should be read. The videos and book information, along with a voting system, were posted to the UCDSB Virtual Learning Commons .

GSS Vice-Principal Trevor Holme credits teacher Patty West and the students in her English class, as well as Learning Commons Informationist Nancy Clow for their role in promoting the book and the overall initiative.

 

"Our goal was to increase awareness of indigenous authors and FNMI issues, and confirmation of achieving that goal was hearing students talking about #UCDSBReads around the hallways of the school," Holme said. "By creating our own dream catcher in the classroom, we were able to catch the negative stigmas and misconceptions surrounding FMNI issues, and start to move towards reconciliation by allowing hopes and desires to pass through."

 

"This is a day to celebrate the successes we have experienced throughout the school year," said Susan Edwards, UCDSB Superintendent of Schools. "This time of awareness and understanding is helping to develop better relationships between our peoples. We are proud that the UCDSB continues to be on the forefront and looked upon as a leader within the province in a guiding way.

 

"As we continue as a board to believe in the pursuit of learning while building a strong sense of caring and respect for all, we encourage our First Nations, Métis and Inuit students to 'Stand Tall and Stand Proud!'"
