CPHS Bears Win EOSSAA Senior Girls' AA Basketball Championship

By Mark Calder

(Arnprior) – It was a basic strategy, but it worked – feed the ball to their best and when the best were double-teamed rely on a strong stable of secondary players who may not have the moves, but can shoot.

That strategy helped the Carleton Place High School Bears to a 41-35 victory over La Salle Secondary School Friday in the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association (EOSSAA) Senior Girls' AA Basketball Championship. The afternoon game was played before a crowded gymnasium at Arnprior District High School.

Bears Coach Barry Russell said his team was led by a strong performance from guard Maddie Reid, who was responsible for 34 of Carleton Place’s 41 points. As they have all year, the focus of the CPHS game plan was to get the ball to Reid or centre Hannah Van Hofwegen, both competitive players who pose a threat whenever they take the court. When Reid and Van Hofwegen were double teamed they dished it to secondary players such as Kate Bains, who drained a critical shot in the waning minutes of the game to extend the Bears’ lead.

“We also play a zone defence and we do it really well,” explained Russell of reasons for the victory.

“Depending on what the other team throws at us we can make it bigger or smaller and if one player gets beaten they know the other has their back. We don’t score 60 or 70 points a game but we’re not going to get a lot of points scored against us either.”

“Most of my players are very ordinary but when they play as a team they all know their roles and they execute game in and game out. The team has become a lot stronger than any individual on it.”

The team is now preparing for the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations Senior Girls' AA Championship, to be held November 26-28 in Kingsville.
