Thousand Islands Elementary School Hosts 70th Anniversary Dutch-Canadian Friendship Tulip Garden Ceremony

(Lansdowne) _ Area dignitaries gathered for a ceremonial planting November 6 of a 70th Anniversary Dutch-Canadian Friendship Tulip Garden on the grounds of Thousand Islands Elementary School. A total of 140 such gardens are being planted across Canada to honour the memory of a gift to Canada in 1945 of 100,000 tulips from the Dutch royal family. The gift was given in recognition of Canada’s role in liberating that nation from Nazi occupation in World War II. Pictured performing the ceremonial planting, from left to right, are: Joe Baptista, mayor, Leeds and Thousand Islands Township; Dave Corney, principal, Thousand Islands Elementary School; John McAllister, trustee, Upper Canada District School Board; Steve Clark, MPP, Leeds and Grenville; and Gord Brown, MP, Leeds and Grenville.
