(Ingleside) Rothwell-Osnabruck School (R-O) is inviting students to take a seat and make a friend.

On Friday, the school took delivery of two “ Buddy Benches ” – specially decorated park benches designed to serve as a safe place for students to sit and signal others they wish to meet a friend. The brightly coloured benches, increasingly popular at schools across North America, will soon be placed on the R-O grounds.

“You put the benches in the schoolyard and students can sit there and wait for another student to come up and say hi,” said Moira Sanders, a parent council member who secured donations from the council and the Cornwall Home Depot store to bring the benches to R-O.

Sanders and family friends painted the benches red, blue, purple, orange and yellow – complete with a sign saying “Buddy Bench” – to make the benches welcoming.

“These Buddy Benches will be used to enhance relationships and provide opportunities for kids to build new relationships with each other on our playgrounds,” said R-O Principal Ewen McIntosh.
