Brockville Collegiate Institute and St. Lawrence Secondary School Reach Quarter-Finals at OFSAA Boys’ A Basketball Championship

By Mark Calder

(Sault Ste. Marie) – Both Upper Canada District School Board teams competing this week at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) Junior A Boys’ Basketball Championship   reached the quarterfinals at the tournament, held in Sault Ste. Marie.

The St. Lawrence Secondary School   Saints lost 73-21 to Central Toronto Academy on Tuesday, while Brockville Collegiate Institute  fell to Toronto French School 48-33 during their final game.

Saints coach Jamie Carr said the combination of Central’s fast break, and injuries to key Saints players, contributed to the loss. Guards Gobi Mohanathas – a top scorer in the eastern regional final – and Kadrae Wright both played through their injuries, but at reduced effectiveness, said Carr.

“They were also a very quick team with a lot of fast breaks and they had a really big player in the middle who was just too big for us (to handle),” said Carr of the loss to Central. “I think really though that it was a combination of us missing our shots and a lot of fast breaks on their end.”

As he had at the eastern regionals, BCI player Jackson Bayles led his team in their final game at OFSAA. Bayles posted nine of BCI’s 33 points.
