UCDSB Reaches Tentative Local Agreement with
OSSTF District 26 PSSP Bargaining Unit

 By Mark Calder

(Brockville) – The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) reached a tentative memorandum of settlement Tuesday with the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) District 26 Professional Student Services Personnel Bargaining Unit (PSSP). This local settlement, when ratified by the UCDSB and the OSSTF PSSP membership, will complete the bargaining process for the student services personnel bargaining unit and complement the agreement on provincial issues achieved on November 27. Terms of the settlement will remain confidential until ratified by both parties.

The PSSP represents 50 active members, such as student support partners, autism therapists, speech language pathologists, psychological associates, and special services counsellors.

“I am pleased with the progress we are making,” said Chair Jeff McMillan of the latest agreement. “Each tentative agreement we reach takes us one step further to a normal situation where the focus is on student achievement and wellness.”

“This is an important development which we welcome,” added Director Stephen Sliwa. “We are anxious to move forward in our working relationship with our employees and this agreement will enable this to happen.”

“I am very happy we have reached an agreement,” said Lisa Buder, OSSTF District 26 PSSP president. “We look forward to a new relationship with the school board, working collaboratively to serve at-risk and special education students.”

The bargaining unit will host an information meeting for its members on Wednesday, December 9. The union will then hold ratification votes for the local and provincial agreements on Thursday, December 10. The Board of Trustees has also scheduled a ratification vote on December 9.

The Board and OSSTF previously ratified local and provincial agreements for OSSTF permanent and occasional teachers.

The UCDSB continues in negotiations with ETFO bargaining units representing elementary teachers and occasional elementary teachers, and the CUPE bargaining unit representing support staff. Bargaining on local issues for these unions is ongoing and the UCDSB remains optimistic that those processes will be brought to a conclusion in a timely and cooperative manner.
