(Brockville) – The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) is encouraging students, staff, families and community members to lace up their running shoes – and work up their appetites – by participating in the 3rd Annual Champions for Kids Foundation Fun Run/Walk on Sunday, June 19, 2011 at the Ferguson Forest Centre in Kemptville.
This year, the event will take place in coordination with Ribfest, an event organized by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Leeds and Grenville. This event will offer a weekend full of food, fun and activities for people of all ages. Both events have one common goal in mind – to support children in our communities.
Similar to last year’s event, the fun run will offer one and five-kilometer run/walk events, as well as a “centipede run” where groups of four to eight people can run/walk as a team while tied together and in costume. CT Photo will be there to capture memories for participants along the route. Prizes will be awarded to the participant who raises the most money, has the best costume (for centipede teams), shows the best spirit and is the youngest or most senior in age.
Registration begins at 9:00 a.m., with a 10:00 a.m. start for the one-kilometer event and a 10:20 a.m. start for the five-kilometer event.
Following the race, participants are invited to stay to take part in Ribfest by enjoying free pony rides, face-painting, colouring and crafts, helium balloons, an indoor craft show, a children’s Mad Science Show, mid-way rides, a rock-climbing wall, and of course, ribs.
Race chairperson Sarah Crawford is excited about the partnership between Champions and Big Brothers Big Sisters for this event.
“We are so excited to offer our Fun Run/Walk on the same day as Ribfest,” she said. “After the run, participants can take part in a full day of fun activities. Not only are participants getting in some great exercise, they are able to spend the day enjoying some family time and helping out two great causes.
“The organizing team is planning to make this year’s Fun Run/Walk the best one yet,” Crawford added. “In the past two years, we have contributed over $4,000 to Champions for Kids. It is truly rewarding to know that the money raised goes right back into the hands of families who see the benefits immediately.”
The UCDSB Champions for Kids Foundation was formed in January 2008 to help level the playing field for children. The charitable wing of the UCDSB raises funds to allow children to play sports, enjoy the arts, and to seek medical and dental care. Since its founding, Champions for Kids has raised nearly $360,000 through donations and activities such as the Fun Run/Walk.
Please see the "Useful Links" and "Downloads" sections at the top right to register on-line and to download pledge forms. Pledge forms will also be made available at schools in April.
The minimum pledge is $20 for families or individual runners, and $100 for centipede teams. Pledge forms will be accepted until race day, and participants will have the opportunity to pre-register through PayPal on the Champions Web site.
Looking for fun activities to do after the run? Under "Downloads" you will find lots of great information about Ribfest.
