Prior Learning Assessment Recognition (PLAR)
Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) is a formal evaluation and accreditation process. Students may obtain credits towards the secondary school diploma (OSSD) for knowledge and skills that they have acquired outside of secondary school. This prior learning is assessed and evaluated to determine whether the student has met the provincial course expectations.
For mature students up to 26 credits may be granted through the PLAR process which involves:
grade 9 and 10 individual assessment/equivalency process
grade 11 and 12 equivalency process
grade 11 and 12 challenge process
Adolescent students may obtain a maximum of four credits through the challenge process. No more than two credits may be obtained in one subject area through the challenge process.
Students should consult their teacher or counselor for more information.
