Family Literacy Program

Overview of Program

The intent of the Family Literacy Program is to provide parents with an understanding of the dynamics of teaching reading skills to their children. Educators in the UCDSB will teach the steps in the reading and writing process to parents in the school environment while the students are present. The instruction for parents will include opportunities to put the reading theory into practice using their own children.

Research bears out that a supportive home environment is one of the most important factors in developing a child’s literacy. Practices such as reading aloud to children, sharing reading, providing a variety of materials, and promoting positive attitudes have a significant impact on a child’s ability to think and learn.

Family Literacy Goals

The Family Literacy Program is intended to address the needs of parents and students in the UCDSB school community who require assistance to implement a home environment where reading and writing become a rich and welcome experience.

The goals for the program are as follows:

To help parents become full partners in the education of their children
To assist children in reaching their full potential as learners
To provide literacy instruction for parents

To Whom is the Family Literacy Program available?

The program is available on selected evenings to parents with children in grades 1 to 5. Interested parents should call their elementary school principal to see if the program is currently offered. The program will be available where numbers warrant.
