CO-OP and OYAP

Co-operative Education

Co-operative education courses are available to students and are based on related courses from an Ontario curriculum policy document or Ministry approved locally developed courses. The student must be concurrently enrolled in the related course or have successfully completed it. Co-operative education courses include a classroom component and a placement component. Placements provide students with opportunities to apply and extend the knowledge, and practise and refine the skills, acquired in the related course, and to demonstrate the achievement of placement expectations that reflect current workplace practices and standards. The student’s individual co-operative education program will be designed following a placement interview. Some students will be eligible to begin an apprenticeship program through a cooperative education placement in a skilled trades setting. Some students will select cooperative education placements which prepare them for the school to work transition.

Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP)

OYAP is a combination of cooperative education and apprenticeship that allows students to learn a skilled trade while at the same time completing the requirements of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Students are eligible if they have completed 16 credits and are 16 years of age or older. Further information on OYAP is available from your teacher.
