all smiles these days. Enrolment at the school is up nearly 12 per cent
largely due to hands-on programming offered at the school.)
(Prescott) – Enrolment at South Grenville District High School has jumped nearly 12 per cent in grades 9 – 12 thanks to a demand for the school’s technical and specialty programs, says Principal Roy Lalonde.
The school had set an enrolment target of 547 students for the 2010-11 school year. The number of high school students taking classes at South Grenville has actually jumped to 611.
Lalonde said he was excited about the increase.
“People said in the early stages of Boundary 2020 - when we decided to organize South Grenville into a 7-12 school - that students would leave us,” Lalonde reflected. “Not only have they stayed, but we’ve increased our enrolment because we have quality staff and quality programming.
“A lot of the new kids at our school are hands-on learners. We have great hands-on programs here – including an awesome hospitality program for these kids.”
Lalonde said that students are particularly interested in the Specialist High Skills Major programs at South Grenville – which include a hospitality program, a transportation program and a sports leadership program. As well, new students are attracted by the school’s courses in native arts and history, a relatively new offering at the Prescott high school.
The principal also credits the enrolment increase to the school’s varied sports programs. The school offers basketball, soccer, football, and badminton as well as a school hockey program that went to OFSAA last year.
