Student of The Day
(Prescott) – A South Grenville District High School student will be recognized for an achievement each day for the rest of the semester thanks to the school’s new Student of the Day initiative.
Since the beginning of February, staff members have nominated students from grades 7-12 to be selected to receive the Student of the Day award. Each day, Principal Roy Lalonde chooses a student who he feels has achieved a specific goal and should be recognized. He calls his or her parents to let them know their child has received the award, and then makes a school-wide announcement congratulating the student and inviting him or her to the office to receive an award package.
Each Student of the Day recipient receives a Certificate of Achievement, a letter to his or her parents that outlines the program and the reason the student received it, a one-day pass to Bats Fitness, a $10 gift certificate to Tim Hortons, and coupons for two Whopper meals at Burger King. The students are also recognized in the Prescott Journal newspaper.
“This was initiated because we have awesome kids and an awesome school but unfortunately the community doesn’t always hear about the great things going on here,” said Lalonde. “I think it’s important to recognize our students of excellence and share that good news with the community. I also think it will put pride into the students and make South Grenville an even better school.”
Grade 10 student Michaela Gummer was recognized last week for her academic excellence, attention to detail and phenomenal perseverance. A teacher nominated her because she continually strives for excellence even when faced with a difficult task, and has a never-quit type of attitude.

“I was surprised,” said Gummer. “It boosts your confidence a bit because people don’t always tell you that you’re doing well until you get something like this. It boosts my motivation.”
