Dear Parents and Students of Grade 8,

As we begin the second half of the school year, our Grade 8 students are beginning to think more and more about their upcoming high school experience. The teachers and administration of RDHS have been working to prepare a series of transition activities that will make the move from elementary school to high school as smooth as possible. Below is an outline of our “Transition Days” that will assist families in learning more about high school and course selection.

On Wednesday, February 1st, 2017- Our RDHS Guidance Counsellor, Mr. Andrew Lawford, will visit the grade 8 classes to discuss high school in general and the skills that are necessary for success in high school. Students will also receive a course selection package that includes a course calendar and recommendations from grade 8 teachers.

On Thursday, February 9th, 2017- Information Night at RDHS from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm

From 5:00pm to 5:30pm- There will be an information session presented by the school administration and the Guidance Department to explain the Grade 9 program and the course selection process.

From 5:30pm – 7:00pm- Parents and students are invited to meet with subject teacher from RDHS to explain the differences in the various courses for high school. Samples of student work, and textbooks will be available for parents to compare the expectations of various courses. Administration will also be available to answer questions.

On Thursday, May 4th, 2017- Grade 8 “Morning in High School” Students will have the opportunity to visit classrooms and meet different subject teachers. This will be an excellent way for the students to prepare for what life will be like as a high school student.

On Friday, September 1st, 2017- Orientation and Welcoming BBQ- Orientation activities will be led by grade 12 students who are part of the RDHS LINK Crew. Students will also have the opportunity to visit the high school to get their schedules, lockers, locks and other information for the first day of school. This will assist students in feeling comfortable with the school and give them an opportunity to ask questions before the first day of high school!

Please mark your calendars with the dates indicated. We look forward to working with students and parents in their preparation for the high school years. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
