Primary division - Olivia Kelly 1st, Heather Droogh 2nd Junior division - Samantha Cormer 1st
PRESS RELEASE - Jan. 26, 2012
South Mountain – Samantha Cormier outlasted 18 other students to win the sixth-annual Nationview Spelling Bee. Now the Grade 6 student will attempt to qualify for the Postmedia Canspell regional competition to be held in Ottawa in March.
Cormier and second-place finisher, Brittany Carkner, went head-to-head for nine rounds before Cormier spelled “cornea” correctly in the 27th round of the oral competition. Carkner, a Grade 5 student, mixed up some letters on her 27th word, “literati”. Maddy Hubbard finished third. She lasted 18 rounds before misspelling “romaine”. Last year’s winner, Karlee Ouellette, finished fourth. Her final word, “chromosome”, came in the 15th round.
Due to the outstanding effort of the four girls and most of the other competitors, the bee took far longer than past years. In fact, a 40-minute break was necessary before the final four entered the 13th round.
Earlier in the day, Olivia Kelly won the Primary Bee for students in kindergarten to Grade 3. Kelly, a Grade 2 student, finished tops in a field of 16 spellers by spelling “beaming” correctly in the 12th round. Heather Droogh, also in Grade 2, finished second. She missed her 12th word of the competition. Olivia Finlay won a spell-off to finish third. She knocked out Grace Ouellette and McKenzie Reid-Stevens to take home third.
