ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
January 2012

On Tuesday, Almonte District High School student Tori Welk put on her school jersey play for the junior girls' volleyball team, before changing into her Carleton Place Cyclones hockey jersey for practice - and after that, left to Ottawa for soccer training.
"My parents are excited for me to get my driver's licence," said the Grade 10 student, who will turn 16 in July, and has two younger siblings who play sports of their own.
The Thunder Bolts have won the majority of their junior girls' volleyball games, lead by Welk as co-captain.
She has always played hockey and soccer at a club level, and now plays for the regional level West Ottawa Soccer Club team.
While her goal is to go to university "anywhere outside of Ottawa" to play soccer and study physiotherapy, she may get just that.
Her West Ottawa team is training through the winter for not only the upcoming season, but an American showcase tournament in the summer.

ADHS grade 12 student, Ali Morton, has been chosen as the Athlete of the Month!
Morton is a star player for the Senior Girls' Basketball Team, which hosted EOSSAA last week. She plays a variety of positions, performing for the team as a "power shooter", as she put a lot of points on the board for the Bolts this season.
Athletic director, Chris Spratt, chose Morton for her strong level of play over four years of basketball at ADHS. Just because basketball season for the girls at ADHS is over, doesn't mean she's packing up her gear. Morton keeps busy with basketball outside of school, playing for the Ottawa Capitals in the provincial wide program.
She is focused on getting into a university with a strong nursing program next year, potentially Queen's in Kingston, but she hopes to be able to play varsity basketball as well.
Morton wears a Bolts jersey most of the year as well, playing on the girls' soccer and volleyball teams.
Congratulations Ali!
