Almonte and District High School Gives Students a Taste of Future Career Opportunities with Mock Futures Fair

Almonte and District High School (ADHS) joined forces with local youth centre Taking Young People Seriously (TYPS) to bring together twenty-four community partners to run the Mock Futures Fair, an event that gave students the opportunity to step into a post-secondary class for a day.
Each student was able to choose four, seventy-five minute sessions from a wide selection of options including: esthetics; neuroscience; biology; carpentry; photography; earth sciences; animation; architecture; hairstyling; policing; journalism; nursing; firefighting; engineering; business/marketing; criminology; social psychology; chemistry; public education coordinator; military; immunology; computer science; and video game developing.
“Many presenters are former grads of ADHS,” said Principal Laurie McCabe. “Others were professors and instructors from the University of Ottawa, Carleton University and Algonquin College. Many incredibly talented presenters who live locally also supported the event.”
McCabe said former ADHS graduate and TYPS Outreach Coordinator Rachel Eades coordinated the event to help build partnerships and joint programs that serve the community as a whole.
Eades secured a number of notable presenters including animator and two-time Emmy Award nominee Neil Hunter, and leading university lecturer Dr. Warren Thorngate. Guidance teacher Anne-Marie Morrison worked closely with Eades to ensure the success of the day.
“I heard lots of great feedback from students,” said McCabe. “Many said that the day opened their eyes to new career opportunities, and they had fun being able to talk to skilled individuals in fields they were interested in. It was a fantastically engaging day for students, staff and presenters.”
