ADHS Hall of Distinction

In 1990, the ADHS Hall of Distinction was established as a project of the Athens Alumni during Athens centennial year to honour former ADHS students who have made a significant contribution to society. Each honouree is presented with a framed photograph and description of their contributions, which is later displayed in the foyer of the school. These recipients are shown in the .pdf, available by clicking HERE. This a large file, so it will take a few minutes to download and open.

In 2010 Shirley Green was inducted as our newest honouree. Introduced by Canon Borden Purcell, Shirley was a former student of Athens.

Green said she came to the high school at the age of 12 in 1945, the result of a mistaken decision to send her there at such a young age, and as a result graduated too young. "I was only 16, so I couldn't go anywhere," she said.

Since graduating, she proceeded to nursing school in toronto. She has been involved in many philantrhopic projects including contributions to the Brockville YMCA, an alpine ski run in British Columbia, a state-of-the-art digital mammography machine for the Brockville General Hospital, and multiple projects overseas which have benefited thousands of people with access to health care services, clean water and education.

At our 2009 commencement ceremony Eleanor Newman was honoured with this distinction. She is shown below, accepting the award.
