K-6 Summer Learning Programs

Summer Learning Program

The UCDSB is offering its Summer Learning Program at eight sites throughout the district where students who have completed Grades 1-3 benefit from lessons in non-fiction literacy and mathematics. The three-week program is being offered from July 8 to 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Students enjoy three hours of academic instruction, and one hour of physical activity per day, as well as nutritional support to help them learn.

Participants benefit from more individualized attention than during the school year. With two specially trained teachers in each class and an average class size of only 15 students, the initiative prepares students requiring additional help for the coming school year.

The program is for students requiring support in early literacy and numeracy skills, who might benefit from summer reinforcement.

The program, which has been running in various forms since 2013, generates some impressive results. Students are tested before and after the program, and data shows each student advances at least one reading level and some experience increases of 1 or more levels.
