Schools Worth Knowing

As part of UCDSB’s ongoing strategy to identify best practices that are most successful in helping all students achieve at high levels, Director David Thomas embarked on an initiative designed to identify best practices.

Two teams were formed to visit elementary and secondary schools that were identified using the most recent EQAO data. The visits included school tours and interviews.

Principals were asked to select 6 representatives from staff/community (teachers, parents, custodians, office administrators, students, E.A.’s) to be interviewed.

Representatives were asked questions such as: “What makes ______a great school? What initiatives, instructional strategies or interventions have been successfully implemented to improve student learning? How is the moral development of students fostered in your school community?”

The findings were compiled and shared with Administrators and school teams during the Leadership CREW Module “Paddling with Precision” held November 9, 2006.

Two presentations were prepared to capture the findings. "The Voices Said..." shares quotes and photos and "Schools Worth Knowing - Part 1" shares photos and identifies Sixteen Traits of High Performance Schools that were compiled as a result of the fact finding visits. Special thank you to the staff, students and parents of the schools visited.
