at Canstruction Cornwall

(Cornwall) – “Spider-Man” amazed both the viewing public and the judges at the 2016 Canstruction Cornwall event.

The food-can statue, created by members of the Cornwall Rotary Club as well as Interact clubs at both St. Lawrence Secondary School (SLIS) and Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School (CCVS), won both the People’s Choice Award and the Structural Integrity Award.

Teacher adviser Josip Kupina said he was pleased by his students’ success.

“Winning was nice, but just being involved with the project was the reward,” said Kupina, who works at CCVS. “The Interact students made new connections with students from SLIS, members of Rotary, staff at the Agape Centre , and others in the community. They contributed to a project that has restocked shelves at Agape and will hopefully remind and inspire the community to help support them in the important work that they do.”

In all, 12,094 food cans were involved in the creation of six team projects for the “food-raiser,” held April 15 at the Benson Centre. The competition benefitted the Agape Centre, which sponsored the build. All cans of food were later donated to help restock the shelves at the agency’s food bank.
