Montague Public School Kindergarten Students Learn About the World Through the Eyes of International Students

(Smiths Falls) – Kindergarten students at Montague Public School learned about the world and its cultures through the eyes of international students studying here.

Students in two kindergarten classes were recently visited by international students from Smiths Falls and District Collegiate Institute, who gave individual presentations about their culture, food, clothing, holidays, and kindergarten in their home countries. The event was organized by St. Lawrence College co-op student Eiryn Harmison and the school’s kindergarten teachers. Countries represented included: Spain, Mexico, China, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea.

“It helped increase our students’ awareness and really brought a sense to our kindergartners of the multicultural nature of our world and our community,” said Principal Kyle Taugher. “Instead of looking at a map or a book, they got to meet people who are connected to different cultures and hear first-hand about their countries. It really engaged the kids.”

After the individual presentations to both kindergarten classes, the high school students sat at tables with small groups of children to discuss their countries further and students enjoyed activities such as colouring flags, and writing words in different languages. The kindergarten students rotated between tables to “travel around the world” and visit with high school students from different countries.

The event was the grand finale to a kindergarten unit on cultures and traditions. At the end of the visit, the kindergartners thanked the high school students by singing It’s a Small World.

Montague Public School is now continuing its partnership with SFDCI to develop similar experiences for other classes in the school.
