(Brockville) – Thousand Islands Secondary School (TISS) took the banner for top intermediate team Tuesday at the Upper Canada Cup Cross Country Championships, held at Memorial Park in Brockville.

The school also won the Grade 8 boys’ and girls’ team awards and the Grade 7 boys’ team award in a meet that attracted 1,200 runners from across the Upper Canada District School Board, said Randy Givogue, a TISS teacher and co-convener of the meet. Runners competed with the assistance of the Sportstats timing chip system, which provided organizers with instantaneous results.

TISS took top intermediate team with 35 points. Perth and District Collegiate Institute and Seaway District High School tied for second with 18 points in intermediate competition, while North Grenville District High School took third with 11 points.

The junior banner was won by Westminster Public School with 41 points, said Givogue. Queen Elizabeth Elementary School took second with 26, while Russell Public School placed third with 18.

“The meet went very well this year,” said Givogue. “We were up over 1,200 kids again and with the warm weather it made it a lot easier on the runners and that contributed to (the board) having the most successful meet to date.

“And overall, it seemed it was more competitive this year, especially in the elementary divisions where a lot of teams scored over 10 points each.”

That even competition could be seen in the individual winners’ results in which 8 of the 10 race victors came from different schools.

First place winners in individual events were:

Grade 4 Boys: Isaiah Beckstead; Vanier Public School; 10:25:06
