October 13th, 2017 (Brockville, ON) – Trustees with the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) met on Wednesday, September 13th, 2017 to discuss a number of topics including:

Ted Kennedy Legacy Awards: Superintendent David Coombs presented this year's Ted Kennedy Legacy Awards to the two Board schools that raised the most money (per pupil) during the 2016 Terry Fox National School Run Day.  Longue Sault Public School was the top elementary school, raising $7,245 or $27.24 per student. Char-Lan District High School was the top secondary school, generating $3,489.80 or $11.08 per student. During 2016 UCDSB schools raised a total of $85,450 for the Terry Fox Foundation. The legacy awards are given annually by the school board in memory of the late Ted Kennedy, a UCDSB superintendent who died in 2011. This is the sixth year Char-Lan has won the award.

Indigenous Education: Superintendent Jodie Barrett presented a report on the Board’s Indigenous Education Program. Barrett said the program strategy is designed to improve student achievement and further the well-being of Indigenous students who attend schools in the UCDSB, numbering more than 520 children and youth. It is designed to improve opportunities for Indigenous students and to also increase knowledge and awareness among all students about Indigenous histories, cultures and perspectives. This year’s program serves to close achievement gaps and remove barriers for Indigenous students in their learning, support Indigenous culture and create opportunities to collaborate with Indigenous partners. This year’s program supports our school board’s efforts to continue taking active steps to apply the model of reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people - promoted by the Federal Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada - in our schools and classrooms. The UCDSB has much to be proud of within its response to developing its annual program plan in this area, as it contributes to preparing our students for a successful life.
