September 22 Update

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The start to this school year has been like none we’ve ever had, and like anything new, is hasn’t been without some challenges along the way. I want to begin by thanking all our parents and guardians for their assistance and careful attention in helping our schools experience a successful start to the new school year.

We have welcomed back approximately 23,000 students to their local school for in-person learning and introduced approximately 1,900 students to the remote synchronous (in real time, from home) learning program.

We have approximately 2,600 students choosing to learn asynchronously, which is a form of self-study from home. All our secondary students who have chosen to learn this way received information and materials on Friday, September 18.

Our elementary students choosing this model received updated information yesterday about this model, with their “first day of school” to be on Monday, September 28. More information about the UCDSB Remote Learning Program can be found on our website. If you have signed up for the asynchronous learning model and have not received information, please contact your local school.

There will be a regular Board of Trustees meeting on Wednesday, September 23. UCDSB staff will be providing trustees with an operational update, including an update on the Remote Learning Program. Our Board meetings start at 6:30 p.m. and are livestreamed to the public on our Board MeetingYouTube channelfor those who want to tune in.

One of our main priorities this year is to be proactive in health measures and prevent the spread of COVID-19. I want to remind and encourage parents to make health screening part of their daily routine. The province has now come out with an online health screening tool for parents to use.
It can be accessed here. A printable version of this tool will soon be available. When we have this, we will be sure to share it with you. In the meantime, please continue to use the printable screening tool from our local health units. It is attached to this email should you require a copy.

Thank you,

Stephen Sliwa
Director of Education
