March 1, 2019 (Carleton Place, ON) - Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute (VCI) won gold Wednesday, February 27 in the girls’ competition at the EOSSAA Open Curling Championships.

VCI defeated North Dundas District High School (NDDHS) 5-3 in a hard-fought game at the Carleton Place Curling Club. VCI’s team of Skip Caitlin Allen, Vice Emilie Lovitt, Second Natasha Fortin, and Lead Evy Cooley, will now advance to the OFSAA Open Curling Championships March 20-23 in North Bay.

“The consistent play of our entire team made the difference in the game,” explained VCI Coach Dan Tremblay of the win. “Caitlin Allen called an excellent game and our players just kept making the shots.”

“The other team also made great shots, which is why the game was so close. But none was greater than Caitlin's thin takeout at the end of the game to win it for our team,” he added.

While North Dundas lost the girls’ final, the school went home with both a silver for the girls, and a bronze after their boys’ team defeated VCI 7-0 in their final game of the tournament.

“We were very happy,” said NDDHS Coach Kathi Poirier. “We would have liked to have won a gold, but we’re not disappointed with a silver and a bronze.”
