Williamstown Run 2018

June 20, 2018 (Williamstown, ON) – For more than a decade Williamstown Public School students have participated in a school-wide learn-to-run program. On June 19th, the school hosted race day including all 369 students.

The learn-to-run program started in May 2018 and was incorporated into gym classes and some teachers took it upon themselves to work it into other parts of their day as well. The goal at the end of the program was for students to complete either a one mile run or a half mile run, depending on age and grade.

At the onset of the program, students started by alternating between one minute of walking and one minute of running, gradually building up their running time. “Today was the first day that some students would have run the entire distance and time,” said grade 1/2 teacher Valery Allen.

Allen has been involved in the school run since its inception and is involved with the Cornwall Triathlon, which has led to a community partnership. The triathlon organization lent the school their inflatable start structure and banners to help line the run and add to the race atmosphere to this event.

“I thought the run was fun. I always enjoy doing it. I like seeing everybody try their best and running,” said grade 6 student Cecilia Liolios.

The top three boys and top three girls in each grade took home either a gold, silver or bronze medal. Liolios earned silver.
