Paynter wins Schulich Leader Scholarship

June 18, 2018 (Kemptville, ON) - Angelica Paynter, of Kemptville, has been selected to receive a $100,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship to study software engineering at the University of Ottawa.

A Grade 12 student at North Grenville District High School (NGDHS) in Kemptville, Paynter will be entering the software engineering program this fall. She was nominated for her outstanding academic and extra-curricular achievements. This is the first nominee from the Upper Canada District School Board to win a Schulich Leader Scholarship.

“Schulich Leader Scholarships are the largest STEM scholarships in Canada,” said Seymour Schulich, a Canadian businessman who founded the scholarship program. “With 50 outstanding students selected in Canada each year it is all but guaranteed that this group represents the best and brightest Canada has to offer. These students will make great contributions to society, both on a national and global scale. With their university expenses covered, they can focus their time on their studies, research projects, extracurriculars, and entrepreneurial ventures. They are the next generation of technology innovators.”

Paynter has a 96 per cent average in Grade 12, over a course load that includes physics, advanced functions, calculus and vectors, computer science, chemistry and English. She has earned that average, while maintaining a sense of balance in her life. In the winter, she plays house league hockey. She plays competitive soccer in the summer, runs with the NGDHS cross country team in the fall and is a member of the school’s track and field team in the spring.

Paynter was both elated and relieved to be awarded the scholarship.

“It made me feel really great,” she said. “Now I don’t have to worry about finances while going through school, I can just focus on my marks. I don’t have to worry about how I’m going to get through school.”

“I was very excited,” said Shari Mitchell, a guidance counsellor who acted as a guarantor for Paynter’s scholarship application. “I did a happy dance for her. No one at North Grenville has ever won this before and she is so deserving. Angelica is the whole package: academics, athletics, and community involvement.  On top of all of that, she is humble regarding her accomplishments and that’s what makes this particularly exciting and gratifying.”

“It also highlights the quality of students that North Grenville produces, as well as what our students can strive for and achieve with hard work and determination.”

About Schulich Leader Scholarships

Schulich Leader Scholarships are prestigious entrance scholarships awarded to high school graduates enrolling in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) undergraduate program at participating universities in Canada and Israel. Recognizing the increasing importance and impact that STEM disciplines will have on the prosperity of future generations, businessman and philanthropist Seymour Schulich established this $100 million scholarship fund in 2012 to encourage our best and brightest students to become the next pioneers of global scientific research and innovation. This program awards 100 scholarships annually (50 in Canada and 50 in Israel), valued at more than $7 million.

In 2018, high schools across Canada put forth 1,400 Schulich Leader Nominees, who in turn became eligible to receive the scholarship and become Schulich Leaders. Schulich Leaders can devote their full time and attention to their studies, as all of their financial needs are covered over the course of their degree. Canada’s highest potential students are winning these scholarships and will make remarkable contributions to society in the future.
