Women in Trades Days - Kemptville
UCDSB Hosts Successful Women in Trades Days in Kemptville
Posted on 05/30/2018

May 30, 2018 (Kemptville, ON) On May 23-24, 2018, the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) and community partners invited approximately 150 young women from nine high schools across the district to take part in a Women In Trades day focused on horticultural trades.

Students learned about hardscaping, laying interlock, and plant identification. They also developed their planting skills and designed landscape for mock clients.

Student volunteers from Alqonquin College’s horticulture program were group and station leaders for this two-day experiential learning event, giving high school students a chance to connect with their peers about the industry and post-secondary programs.

“I like to do a lot of hands on stuff, like auto shop, so I wanted to come to check out and see what hands-on activities were here,” said Megan Ciglich from South Grenville District High School.

“I can see a future for myself in this industry,” added Angel Lemire, also from South Grenville.

The day was organized by Landscape Ontario, the Upper Canada District School Board, and the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario, and funded through the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Progam (OYAP). The goal of Women in Trades days is to introduce young women to non-traditional career options.

“Students were really excited to learn. Some didn’t even know that these things were career options,” said Lori Carlisle, Learning Partner, Student Success with UCDSB. “It’s really important for students to be exposed to as many career options as possible."
