Centennial ‘67 Public School Hosts 32nd Annual Grandparent Dinner
(Spencerville) – The students and staff of Centennial ‘67 Public School held their 32nd annual Grandparent Dinner on December 17, 2009 at the Drummond Building in Spencerville. Each student in grades 4-6 invited their own grandparent or an “adopted grandparent” from the community to come out and enjoy the meal.
This year’s dinner included a hot turkey dinner with all the trimmings, prepared by the grade 4 students and parent volunteers. The grade 5 students were responsible for decorating the venue with student artwork and table decorations. The grade 6 students acted as hosts and served the meal. The team of volunteers was led by Nicole Kehoe and Sherida Harcus. The kitchen crew was led by Roger Millar and his wife, Debbie.
Organizers say the children took great pride in the event and learned a lot about character education, a mainstay of the Upper Canada District School Board. Not only did they work as a team, learn to serve others and learn about food preparation and cooking for large quantities, they experienced the satisfaction of doing something special for others.

The Spirit of Christmas
Students at the Almonte Campus of the T.R Leger School of Adult, Alternative, and Continuing Education came together recently to experience the true meaning of Christmas. Denise Gaudet, contact teacher for the school, challenged the staff and students to extend their thoughts to a person in the community who needed help during the Christmas season. With that in mind, a gift basket containing food and toiletries weighing over 30 pounds was created from donations made by the staff and students. The gift was presented to Minister Deborah Roi of the Zion United Church in Cedar Hill on Friday, December 18. Pictured with the basket are: Annie Mingeriak, Katie Heroux, Denise Gaudet, Jessica Barry and Wray Henhawk.

Central Public School Staff Complete First Froglogic Staff Challenge
(Cornwall) – Staff members at Central Public School have spent the last three months embracing their wellness and have completed their first Froglogic-based staff challenge.
Since September, staff members have participated in Mission G: Going the Distance and have walked, run or biked individually or in groups to tally 5,373 kilometers – the exact distance of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope.
Froglogic is a US Navy SEAL-based fitness, nutrition and wellness program for kids and adults. New Central Principal Kieran Kennedy introduced Froglogic to staff and students at the start of the school year and created Mission G to give everyone an opportunity to work towards specific wellness goals.
Educational assistant Dayna McLellan-Mines said staff members plan on continuing to up their kilometers so they can total enough to say they’ve reached Port Hardy, British Columbia.
“Mission G has brought physical activity to the forefront and fostered new friendships,” said McLellan-Mines.
