(Kingston) - Teachers from across eastern Canada will descend on Kingston October 21 and 22 to learn about the value of small schools in education.
The Small School Summit will take place at the Ambassador Conference and Resort Centre and will offer top-quality keynote speakers such as educational consultants Stephen Peters, Nancy Doda and Neila Connors, as well as workshops on topics ranging from the SMART Inclusion Project to using iPods in classroom lessons.
“This will be a world-class summit focusing on the value and specific needs of small schools from kindergarten to Grade 12,” said Tim Mills, summit co-chair. “This conference will address innovative and successful ways to design programs that meet the needs of all learners.
“It will also be a great opportunity for educators to share ideas and discuss what works best so we can improve the way we do our work both for our students and ourselves.”
Peters, CEO and president of The Peters Group, a US-based educational consulting company, will kick off the conference with a keynote speech entitled Teaching to Capture and Inspire All Learners. Peters is the author of best-selling books Do You Know Enough About Me to Teach Me and Teaching to Capture and Inspire All Learners.
During his keynote and subsequent breakout session he will discuss how educators can change their practices to engage all learners.
Connors will present a speech entitled If You Don’t FEED (Fuel, Engage, Empower Daily) the Students They STARVE (Stop Trying and Reject Valuable Education). Connors runs NAC Connections Inc., a corporation dedicated to the implementation of positive actions and attitudes in people. Connors’ primary focus as an educator and life coach is to teach people to build their own bridges for a successful life.
Delegates will enjoy a variety of workshops during the summit. Former Olympian Ann Green will present on achieving goals and maintaining balance in life. The yoga master and cancer survivor will share her journey toward peace and harmony in her own life, while equipping delegates with the skills to bring the same balance to students in grades kindergarten to 12.
Michael Kerr, a consultant with the Sagonaska Demonstration School, will present Please Take Out Your iPod. This workshop will equip teachers with the tools to use the iPod in the classroom as an educational tool instead of fighting with students to turn their hand-helds off.
Pam Graydon, a retired teacher with the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board, will present You Want Me to Do What? – a workshop on techniques to engage reluctant learners.
Other workshop topics include: Embedding Assistive Technology in the Curriculum; Making Environmental Education Relevant; Think Globally, Act Globally; Technology and Autism; Smart Inclusion; “Teching” Towards the Future; Lonley @ School – Administrative Challenges in a Small School; Collaborative Inquiry; and Yoga in the Classroom.
