(Iroquois) – Brandon Mooney, a recent graduate and valedictorian at Seaway District High School (SDHS) has dedicated his summer to further promoting Living in the Chorus, a CD he launched May 1 to help raise money for the Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry and Prescott-Russell branch of the Canadian Cancer Society.
Mooney says the 11-track CD, which features music written and performed by local student musicians has received great feedback by those who have purchased it from various Upper Canada District School Board schools and local businesses. However he’s hopeful for an increase in sales during July and August.
“I’m going to start pushing the CD more now that school is done,” he says. “It’s been going well so far but this is a large project. It’s coming along.”
Mooney came up with the idea to create the CD to not only raise funds for cancer research but to showcase the contributions of youth in the community. Each song relates to persevering against cancer, a subject that hits close to home for Mooney.
“My uncle and grandmother had cancer and my sister’s grandmother did as well,” he says. “Cancer affects one in three people; it’s something that affects everyone directly or indirectly. There are tons of worthy causes out there but I thought this is something that money should be put towards as often as it can be.”
Living in the Chorus was professionally produced by Heaven’s Radio Studio in Vankleek Hill and cost approximately $12,000 to create. To date, Mooney says the project has almost broke even from CD sales, CD back cover ad sales, sponsorships and a variety of fundraisers and live shows including the SDHS Relay for Life, the May Show Festival in Vankleek Hill and a community fundraiser at the North Grenville Municipal Centre in Kemptville.
“I’m going to start going door-to-door as well as start contacting a few more businesses,” he says. “I know that we will be having a show at The Branch Restaurant in Kemptville some time this summer as well. I’m going to invite all of the acts on the CD to play there.”
“Really, anywhere we can get the CDs out is great,” he says.
Mooney, who is enrolled in the Environmental Geoscience program at Acadia University starting this September, says Living in the Chorus will satisfy all musical tastes.
“Everyone enjoys at least one song because they’re all very different genres,” he says.
Living in the Chorus can be purchased for a minimum donation of $15 at Canadian Tire in Morrisburg, Nationview Golf Course, Scotiabank and Pampered and Polished in South Mountain, The Review in Vankleek Hill and through Mooney.
