(Kemptville) – The Upper Canada District School Board announced today that it will seek tenders from the contractors who are prequalified to build a new high school in Kemptville. The Ontario Ministry of Education approved the school board’s design for a new school to replace North Grenville District High School, thereby allowing the board to go to tender. Tenders will close August 11th.
The board is currently seeking approvals from the municipality of North Grenville and the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority. Meanwhile, if the successful bidder is within the board’s budget for the project, approval from the board and ministry will be required before the contract can be awarded.
“This is exciting news for the North Grenville community,” said local board Trustee Joan Hodge. “This is a significant step in our process to build the new school and it means that if everything goes according to plan, we could see shovels in the ground as early as this September.”
Board Chair Greg Pietersma added, “This is a critical juncture for this project. With this approval we have met all ministry requirements in our planning.”
The target date for the opening of the new high school is September 2012.
The new school is 7,267 square meters in size and will accommodate 726 grades 7 – 12 students in a two-storey structure. It will feature a music room close to the stage in the cafetorium. It will also feature wood and auto shop technologies, a double gym with hard wood flooring, Internet café overlooking the courtyard, landscaped courtyard, and a focus on natural lighting.
