(Morrisburg) – Golfers raised more than $28,000 for kids in need July 8 at the 2nd annual Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) Champions for Kids Foundation Golf Challenge.
A total of 150 golfers attended the event, held at the Upper Canada Golf Course in Morrisburg. The proceeds - raised through green fees, tournament sponsorships and a live and silent auction - will support Champions for Kids, a charity which collects money so kids in need can play sports, enjoy the arts, and seek medical or dental care.
“I was very pleased with the day,” said Tournament Co-Chair David McDonald of the fundraiser. “People were out here having fun and helping the children of eastern Ontario. If you can have fun while helping a child that’s the best day you can have.”
A highlight of the event was a hole-in-one by Ottawa resident Perry Brunt, who sunk the shot on the 13th hole as golfing partners Frank Hummell, Dave MacDonald and Rene Bourget looked on.
“I wanted to stick it as close to the pin as I could and I got lucky,” said a delighted Brunt. “It hasn’t really sunk in yet, but it’s kind of cool.
“Afterwards, I picked up my tee and high-fived the guys. It was great because they were even more excited about it than I was.”
For accomplishing the feat, the financial analyst won a TaylorMade Tour Burner driver and two fairway woods valued at $1,200.
The tournament’s live and silent auction, which took place following a prime rib dinner, featured bargains on a variety of items including: gift baskets, sports memorabilia such as a hockey stick signed by recent NHL first-round draft pick Matt Duchene, and foldable canoes.
The Upper Canada District School Board Champions for Kids Foundation was founded in January 2008. Since then the foundation has raised more than $130,000 to help kids in need across eastern Ontario.
